Competing in all major motorsports, BFG gets involved with dirt, drift, track and drag sports, but also produces a large number of tires for auto manufacturers, street performance, ports trucks and your everyday daily driver.

Recently, BFG arranged an event out in the middle of nowhere (Utah) to test some of its latest products. This includes the BFG SuperSport AS, an all-season performance tire, and the Mud Terrain T/A, a tire intended for, well, mud. The event would begin on the streets of Salt Lake City and end at Miller Motorsports Park, one of the premiere racing facilities in the country.

With miles and miles of open road, we set off in a 2006 Mitsubishi Evolution. Consider it the perfect vehicle for this test, A) it's AWD B) we have extensive driving time with it and C) it comes standard with Yokohamas. If the BFGs perform half as good as the Yoks, most drivers would probably be happy. The SuperSports performed just as expected the whole way to Miller. They weren't loud, but provided as much grip as one would expect out of all season rubber.



It was on arrival to the motorsports park that we would have the real opportunity to see what the new all season tire was capable of. We had the opportunity to sit down with a few of the engineers and have them explain exactly what separates the BFG from other all season tires. Like other all season tires, the SuperSport uses multiple tread compounds to improve traction in various conditions. Three unique tread compounds designed for flexibility in cold, wet and dry conditions are positioned side-by-side across the gripping surface of the tire and combined with three dedicated tread design zones. These three areas are designed with a BFG technique that creates a continuous single-strand, spiral-wrapped, aramid fiber reinforcement placed precisely under the tread. Doug Brown of BFG stated that this feature gives the Super Sport incredible strength while maintaining a consistent footprint at high speed. Sounds, good but it's all in the drive.

Although we drove to Miller using the Evo, our first test would be on the wet with Audi A4s and Chris Cook as our guide. For parity's sake, we went back-to-back with BFG's all-seasons followed by Dunlop 5000s (also all seasons) and back to SuperSports. This method was repeated similarly when we took the Mitsubishi Evos on-track to test the dry capabilities of the SuperSports. You'll have to watch the videos to see our impressions.

Mirroring our experience with the SuperSports, the team responsible for the event setup two courses to test the new Mud Terrain tires, a mini-Baja course complete with a buggy and a low-speed obstacle course intended to highlight the grip capabilities of the tires. BFG claims that the Mud Terrain has improved wheel and tire protection from off-road hazards, especially during aired down situations and “incredible” rock climbing and slick surface traction, but that's all pr-speak until you get behind the wheel and as editors, we're always proned to a bit of skepticism.

We'd be lying if we didn't say the Mud Terrain's kicked us in the pants. BFG's replacement to its popular off-road series of tire can make most anyone feel like a Baja-winning champion. The Mud Terrain's grab the dirt and mud as if they've got 12-inch claws attached. They're just that good. In high-speed, seemingly-low traction situations, the tires let you point and go with ease. And under low speed obstacles, the sidewall and tread design help the tire (and you) effortlessly traverse pretty much whatever is in front of you. Overall the new BFG tires have performed exceptionally well, and beyond our expectations. We'll be more than happy to test these tires further in some of our upcoming project vehicles and test cars.
