From the moment you begin your first race, you’re pummeled with the violent sounds of rocks hitting the undercarriage to the curdling crunch as you hit a K-rail. Then when you actually open your eyes, you are greeted to a gorgeous, fast paced, door to door racing experience.

Where Shift 2 exceeds is in its immersion. There have only been a handful of racing titles that ever gave the sense of actually being behind the wheel of one of these 600hp beasts. Without a doubt Shift 2 is at the top. But let’s make this clear, Shift 2 is not a simulator. It places itself firmly between arcade and simulation so anyone can grab a controller and play. It will not challenge the likes of Gran Turismo 5 and Forza for the realism title, but it’s not trying to. This game is all about replicating the heart pounding moments that only racing can create. And it’s pretty damn successful at it.

The game looks fantastic on the PC. The textures are smooth, the frame rate solid, and the effects strike a great balance of realism and style. Whether playing a night race where you depend on headlights to know which direction is the next corner, or turning into a hairpin at sunset only to be blinded by the setting sun. These details are implemented exceptionally. Like any game, this game is not perfect either. When looking off the track and into the stands and behind the barriers, there are the same 10 or so static models that are completely motionless…which can be an immersion breaker. The other minor letdown was the rendering of tire smoke. This game went through all the effort to replicate drifting, but then manages to forget one of drifting’s key ingredients. As you are going 70mph sideways around Irwindale Speedway you should be able to see the smoke billowing in the rearview mirror. Instead, there lingers a patchy, small trail for a few moments then disappearing.

The progression in the game is a combination of rpg as you level up as a driver by earning xp in races, and winning races that unlocks the next. There are a large variety of race types to compete in, from hot lap, elimination, drifting, manufacture races, loaner car races, etc. This keeps the game feeling fresh and paced very well. The handling of the cars themselves is right in-line with this action/simulation hybrid genre. The cars feel heavy but still have the ability to turn on a dime. Never is the need to really fight with the car because the game never wants you to feel too out of control. The AI is similarly balanced but it will send you spinning into the dirt with a wrong nudge entering a turn.

We suggest this game should only be played from the new helmet cam. This view places the driver inside the helmet of the driver. When coming up to a corner, the view will shift towards the apex of the turn, giving a better view of where the car needs to be. This perspective took a few races to get accustomed to but we suggest it’s the best choice. This feature alone is almost certainly worth the price of admission. This one little addition to a racing game makes Shift 2 standout.
